LONDON FASHION WEEK A/W 2012

Students from BA (Hons) Fashion Photography at University College Falmouth take to the streets of London during Fashion Week A/W 2012

The male photos are from the James Long show and a few from backstage. He is the first menswear designer to win the Fashion Forward award and the A/W collection was all about texture and heavy layers, with both knitwear and leather which is meant to be James Long’s signiture style. In particular the red leather trousers stood out to me and I also loved the chunky knit scarves.

Before the show started Emilia Wickstead introduced the collection for A/W 12/13 and said it was all about ‘Taking a modern approach to English traditions’ She took Eighteenth century references with big skirts and square necklines and then gave them a modern ready to wear twist. The collection was mainly inspired by the English countryside and horses especially in some of the printed dresses. This was definitely my faviourite out of all the shows, very intimate and scary as it was the first show I went too, but the best collection out of them all I think.

I was doing street photography around Mayfair when I passed a smartly dressed man sat outside of a café with black-rimmed glasses and a familiar face. He caught me looking and so I moved on and continued photographing along the street.
When I passed him again I realised that the man had put down his paper and was watching me, he caught my eye and waved me over. I thought this was quite strange but I began to walk over as he stood up to shake my hand and in an eloquent voice said ‘Hello, can I buy you a coffee?’ I politely declined and explained that I was working taking photos of the trends in the area of Mayfair and asked whether I could photograph him. He posed holding the football paper, which he said he had to read in order to consume anything for breakfast, and we continued to talk after I took his photo. We spoke about London Fashion Week and even baked beans and marmite on toast. He mentioned his name was Bill and when I asked him what he does for a living he quietly said he was an actor. I asked whether I would have seen him in anything because I thought he looked familiar and he said, ‘Well I don’t know Nicole, I don’t know what you’ve seen.’ I took this as either he hadn’t done a lot or he was somebody famous and didn’t want to tell me. After our conversation I said that it was lovely to meet him and thanked him for the photo but I had to go continue photographing. I then went to meet some friends and explained the weird meeting I’d just had, I showed them the photo and they shouted – ‘THAT’S BILL NIGHY!’

He told us he is one third of ‘Sibling’ a brand new label debuting that fashion week. He seemed extremely busy and didn’t look up from his phone once whilst talking, so really had a limited amount of time to interview him.

This women was the very first person we approached at fashion week, we asked what she was wearing and everything was listed from Dior to Prada. It was at this point you realise you are really under dressed.

Gemma Vaughan.Outside the London Fashion Week hall my group and I saw a car surrounded by excited photographers; being curious we followed the commotion down towards the backstage area and waited to see who was inside. Eventually the car door was opened and Kanye West emerged, I managed to get this sneaky snapshot of him!

From the entrance of Somerset House appeared the lovely Susie Bubble. She is a writer and editor living and working in London and started her blog ‘Style Bubble’ in March 2006. I managed to approach her with my group and we asked her a few questions about what she was wearing, what brings her to LFW and who are her influences; theses answers will be appearing in one of our chosen interviews for my group blog.
